Tradition
Pastor Ryan - October 19, 2026
Traditions are the worst reason to do anything. Because we’ve always done it that way is not a reason, not really. There is much wisdom that is handed down to us, but we should know the “why.”
We have a fabulous tradition here at Christ Lutheran in our Oktoberfest. We get the Das Oompapas to come and play. Not only that, but we have a standing agreement with Divine Barrel, who puts a keg of Oktoberfest beer aside, just for us, every year. Our own Chef Mike has expanded the menu each year to be receptive to those who would rather not eat pork, like hotdogs over brats.
Obviously Oktoberfest has been happening in Bavaria for a long time. And our borrowing of that celebration is a bit of a nod to the Lutheran heritage of being German. But if you're anything like me, I’m not German. I am a proud Midwesterner. But that doesn't stop me from wearing lederhosen.
The real focus, and I think we should remind ourselves of this every year, is that the Holy Spirit is active! The Reformation may have started in Germany 500 years ago. And that is good enough for a theme, but it could have just as easily come out of Greece. And, if the reformation came out of Greece, maybe we would have a Toga party instead of an Oktoberfest. Either way, the joy is real. And the reminder is that the Reformation isn’t a thing that happened. The Reformation is a thing that is STILL happening.
As you invite friends, neighbors, and family, you are joining in the continued mission of the Church. The mission to reach out of ourselves and invite everyone to a relationship with Jesus. Which, really, is the biggest celebration of all: the one that has no end - eternal life in Christ.
When your friends and co-workers raise an eyebrow and are surprised that there is beer at a church event, lean into it. We’ve been breaking molds and celebrating the Holy Spirit for over 500 years. It's kind of a tradition for the Lutherans.
